Piduruthalagala Mountain

This is considered the highest mountain in Sri Lanka. Therefore, it is covered with fog for most of the day. This mountain, which starts near the city of Nuwara Eliya, which is about 1800 meters above sea level, has an altitude of 2524 meters (from sea level). Piduruthalagala Mountain got this name around the 1940s. Its top is a flat, horizontal rocky plateau. It is covered with dry grass. Due to the dry weather conditions that came to the Nuwara Eliya area at that time, this grass dried up like straw on a threshing floor. It was called Piduruthalagala by the way. Many of the plants and animals that can be seen in the forest around this mountain are endemic to our country. Examples include ferns, bluebells, sedges, hawks, deer, and squirrels. The vegetation here is lush green and in the summer it takes on a pale yellow color. Hence, it is called the Pinduru Laden Mountain or Piduruthalagala. This mountain, which is formed by numerous waterfalls, is also known as "Pedrokanda".

When viewed from the top of the mountain (on a clear day without fog), one has the opportunity to see beautiful places such as Haggala, Sripadaya, Kikiliyamana, Single Tree, Conical Hill, Hortonthenna, and Thotupalakanda. Since the towers of the Rupavahini Corporation and radio transmission towers are located here, it has been designated as a high security zone. More importantly, the radar system of the security forces controlled by the Sri Lanka Air Force is located here. Therefore, this is a high security zone.
