Royal Botanical Garden









 Location

It is located at an altitude of about 460 meters above sea level and has an area of ​​147 acres. It is located 5.5 kilometers west of Kandy.


Climate

It receives annual rainfall of 200 days out of 365 days a year.


History

The history of this park dates back to 1371. The court of King Wickramabahu III was located near the Mahaweli River in the area where this park is currently located. It is also said that King Wimaladharmasuriya built a temple on this land and that the temple was later demolished and destroyed after Sri Lanka surrendered to the British Crown in 1815. Later, the land required for the construction of a botanical garden was laid out by Alexander Moon in 1821. In 1912, the ownership of this park was transferred to the Department of Agriculture. Ancient palm trees can be seen here and the first tea plant in Sri Lanka was planted in this garden. The British built this garden to spend their leisure time freely.


Tourist attractions

This garden is famous for its orchid species. There are also more than 4000 plant species here. Among them are especially medicinal plants, spice plants, palm plants and orchid species. About 2 million local and foreign tourists visit here annually.
