The first trade union emerged from the printing workers' strike
The first organized labor struggle in Sri Lankan history is known as the strike of the printing workers of H. W. Cave and Company in 1893. More than a thousand printing workers and bookbinders employed in newspaper offices and printing companies joined this struggle.
After that unsuccessful strike, the first trade union in the country was established under the name 'Printing Workers' Union', and the trade union movement in this country that began with it has a long history of about 130 years.
