University education is very important for the development of an individual and a country. Since the 19th century, with the advancement of science and technology in countries such as Germany and America, the role of universities has expanded, and today they have become major centers for producing professionals and researchers. The main importance of university education is as follows: Advanced knowledge and research: Universities are institutions that not only provide education, but also conduct research that discovers new knowledge (Research Universities). Professional competence: They produce skilled professionals in fields such as medicine, engineering, law, arts and management that the country needs through the award of various academic degrees. Global and local shaping: By providing education in line with international standards, the university system of Sri Lanka (such as the University of Colombo) develops the human resources of the country. Social and economic development: Higher education leads individuals to obtain higher employment opportunities and become economically independent.

 National identity: Based on the roots of the ancient Pirivena education system The current university system provides modern knowledge while preserving national identity. The university system in Sri Lanka is governed by the University Grants Commission (UGC), and its main objective is to provide opportunities for higher education to students who pass the Advanced Level.
